Foodie Freebies and Events in NYC

Mariel here. It’s been awhile since I posted about Manhattan-based freebies, but I’m feeling extra broke this month, so I thought I’d share the tasty deals, discounts and events I’ve drummed up in the area. Happy penny pinching.

Tippr.com: This subscription-only website scouts out its favorite restaurants, boutiques, spas etc and then barters a deal for its subscribers that enables them to buy an exclusive discount voucher for 50-90% off. Then, you just print out the voucher and use it in-store like cash. And since Tipper.com harnesses the formidable purchasing power of group buying, the more people that open their wallets, the bigger the discount gets. [via DailyCandy]

A Conversation With…:  Healthy Appetite‘s Ellie Krieger and Dovetail‘s John Fraser are hosting “A Converstion With…” at the American Museum of Natural History on May 21st from 9:30-11am. The event discusses school-lunch initiatives, healthy and sustainable eating, buying local and Upper West Side restos (if they don’t all close before then). Oh, and a Continental b-fast will be served starting at 8am. Tix cost $25 to $35, and all net proceeds benefit Wellness in the Schools, an organization dedicated to health, nutrition, and fitness in NYC public schools.

Southern Hospitality: The Timbersnake-owned BBQ joint on the Upper East has kicked off its 25-cent Wings & Trivia night every Monday from 4pm to closing.

McCormick and Schmick’s: The Midtown West seafood spot is offering a menu of $10.40 specials on April 15th in honor of tax day ($10.40, get it? GET IT?). They’ll also spot you a voucher for $10.40, which you can redeem during your next visit.

BLT Restaurants: BLT Market, Prime, Steak etc is also offering a much-needed tax break: cheap booze! On April 15th, all cocktails, beer and wine will be sold at 50% off. For a complete list of NYC Tax Day freebies, check out 89th and Broke.

Organique: If you live or work near Organique on 23rd and Park (their only location), pop in every Wednesday for a free small coffee. No purchase necessary, no hassling, no dirty looks.

Organic Valley: OK, so this one isn’t NYC-centric, but if you love dairy – milk! cheese! eggs! cheeeeeeese! – then print out these delightful coupons for a few bucks off at the overpriced, understocked grocery store near you.

The Flavor of Midtown: What? Sick! At first glance, who wants to spend extra time in Grand Central? But upon closer inspection, this event event is offering tasty nibbles from venerable eateries like Bice, The Campbell Apartment, The Palm, Pershing Square and Silverleaf. While the price isn’t cheap – $75! – proceeds benefit the Grand Central Neighborhood Social Services Corporation, which is the largest not-for-profit homeless services provider in New York City. The event takes place Thursday April 29th from 7-9:30pm. And if you’d really rather not shell out the 75 bones, Midtown Lunch is hosting a ticket giveaway.
