In thinking about my own plans for the holiday – a weekend with my children – my first thought was, “Everyone under one roof, I can’t wait!” My second thought was, “What are we gonna eat?”
Conjuring up a menu for this weekend took me on an unexpected time-warp through childhood memories of celebrations past, a la Levittown in the 1950’s. I remembered our backyard BBQs with dozens of children organizing baseball games in the quiet street as our parents laughed, drank, and argued over the best way to man the grill. My mother took over as Top Chef for the day (well, everyday I suppose) and while she made a variety of summer specialties, her Macaroni Salad and Deviled Eggs can still evoke images and scents of those days long past.
While the following Memorial Day menu ideas are far from gourmet, they harken back to a time when life was simple and the pleasure of those days was found in the camaraderie of good friends and families feasting on home-cooked foods and one other’s company.
